A tack, to tack, on a tack, tic-tack-toe
The word tackhas many meanings in sailing.
The bottom front corner of a sail is thetack. The
nountack also refers to the boat’s heading in
relation to the wind (that is, on starboardor port
tack). Tacking is the act of changingtacksby
turning through the wind, entering the no-sail
zone from one side and exiting the other.
